Product Splash 2021

Product Design
My Role
Designer
Project Duration
August 2021

Product Splash is a five-week product design and management "hack-a-thon", bringing aspiring designers and PMs together from around the world. A collaboration between the Design Buddies and Product Buds communities, the challenge for our design team was to, "explore and find innovative ways support the transition from pandemic life to a more hopeful & inclusive future — with a new mobile or desktop app."

Our main deliverables for the competition were:

  • An app prototype in Adobe XD in line with the event's theme, "Healing from the Pandemic"
  • A pitch deck based on our research findings and design solution, along with a written case study

My team and I approached the challenge from the angle of pandemic hobbies and new skills developed in quarantine. We surveyed more than 30 people and conducted 10 one-on-one interviews. Our research explored how young professionals learned a new skill in the absence of in-person meetups and classes, and our solution serves as a bridge between solo learning (through video and written tutorials) and community learning.

My Role as a Designer

Synthesizing our research on what amateur crafters and hobbyists found most important, I designed the top-level navigation for our app concept. I also designed the look of the class pages, the notifications display, and the "suggested materials" screen.

The design team: three Product Designers (Dina, Yasmin, and Myself) and our Project Manager Niharika.
Data from our survey of more than 30 people. Needing a new way to unwind and having more free time were the primary motivations for being creative in the pandemic. The majority of people used YouTube as a tutorial source.
Some insight from user interviews, including user pain points about a disconnected feeling between students and instructors.
Screens for browsing classes by category, and a screen for challenges in the app.
Screens for the mental health side of the app, including meditation classes and an in-app mood tracking journal.
Wireframes showing 5 different screens of the flashcard app.Two "before" pictures of the flashcard website on the left. On the right, there are four screens of the new app design.A diagram of flashcard screens designed for screens of 320px, 768px, and 1440px in width.
